Universal Quantum develops trapped ion quantum computers using 'quantum charge-coupled device' (QCCD) architecture. Founded by Winfried Hensinger from University of Sussex.

Major German Contract: €67M from German Aerospace Center (DLR) - largest EU government investment for quantum tech research. Building two world-firsts in Germany: single-chip quantum computer with electronic chip, and multi-chip system with up to 100 qubits.

December 2025: UK-Germany collaboration announced - £6M joint quantum R&D call for 2026, £8M for Fraunhofer UK photonics.

November 2025: CEO Sebastian Weidt testified before UK Parliament on quantum computing policy.

Partnerships: Rolls-Royce (fuel-efficient aviation turbines), German Aerospace Center. Recognized as second government backing scalable quantum mission after UK investment.
